Many university students dislike studying history because there is little to get excited about when historical event are presented in a boring manner . However ,I’ll never forget my American History professor Dr Williamson . Each event leaped from the pages of our text and become as real as the daily news report on the radio . My favorite lecture concerned the American Revolution. Dr.Williamson told us the story Paul Revere,a well-known silversmith, working in his shop. The American colonists were angry because of the British control over their lives.Revere felt that war between the British and the colonists was inevitable. Then,Dr.Williamson told us about Revere rowing across the Charies River from Boston on April 18.1775.I can see the profesaor now as he raised his hand to his forehead as if he were looking accose the Charles River to the Old North Church in Boston.Suddenly,Revere caught sight of two lanterns ,a signal which meant that the British would attack by sea . He jumped on his horse to warm the villagers of the attack . Professor Williamson reminded us that the first battles of the American Revolution were fought at Concord and at Lexington , Massachusetts , the year before the Declaration of Independence was singed in 1776 . Last week I visited one of my old neighborhoods in Washington D.C . I had not been there for twenty years and as I walked along the street ,my mind was flooded by memories of the past . I saw the old apartment building where I had lived an the playground where I had played . As I viewed these once familiar surroundings , images of myself as a child there came to mind . However ,what I saw and what I remembered were not the same. I sadly realized that the best memories are those left untouched. My old apartment building, as I remembered ,was bright and alive. It was more than just a place to live. It was a movie house, a space station ,or whatever my young mind could imagine. I would steal away with my friends and play in the basement.

This was always exciting because it was so cool and dark, and there were so many things there to hide among. There was a small river in the back of the building. We would go there to lie in the shades of trees and enjoy ourselves.

However, what I saw was completely different. The apartment building was now in disrepair. What was once more than a place to live looked hardly worth living in. The windows were broken. The once clean walls were covered with dirty marks. The river was hardly recognizable. The water was polluted and the trees and flowers were all dead. The once sweet smelling river now smelled terrible. It was really heartbreaking to see all this.

As an American, I feel threatened an confused, while only yesterday I felt proud and invincible. As a citizen of the global community , I have been shocked into the reality of the reach of global terrorism . As someone who hopes to understand unspeakable acts , I am at a loss to understand this one , perhaps because it hits so close to home .f , for some reason , has decided to strike at the United States . Despite the many people killed , the intended target of this attack was American Power . The goal was to strike a paralyzing fear into the hears and minds of all citizens of the U.S, and perhaps its allies as well . Thus , we—all of us—are the real targets of this attack . Gary clouds move as low as smoke over the tree tops at Lolo Pass . The ground is

white . The day is June 10th . It has been snowing for the past four days in the Bitterroot Mountains. Wayne Fairchild is getting worried about our trek over the Lolo Trail—95 miles from Lolo Montana to Weippe in Idaho , across some of the roughest country in the west . Lewis and Clark were nearly defeated 200 years ago by snowstorms on the Lolo . Today Fairchild is nervously checking the weather reports . He has agreed to make me across the toughest , middle section of the trail ---- “but with this weather ?”

When Lewis climbed atop Lemhi Pass , 140 miles south of Missoula ,on Aug.12 th ,1805,he was astonished by what was in front of him :“immense ranges of high mountains still to the west of us with their tops partially covered with snow .” Nobody then knew the Rocky Mountains existed ,with peaks as twice as high as anything in the Appalachians back East . Lewis and Clark weren’t merely off the map ;they were travelling outside the American imagination.

Today their pathway through those mountains holds more attraction than any other ground over which they travelled , for its raw wildeness is a testimony to the character of two cultures :the explorer who braved its hardships and the Native Americans who prize and conserve the path as a sacred(神圣的) gift . It remains today in virtually the same condition as when Lewis and Clark walked it .

The Lolo is passable only from July to mid—September . Our luck is holding with the weather , although the snow keeps getting deeper . As we climb to Indian Post Office , the highest point on the trail at 7.033.ft , the drifts are 15 th ,and up . We have covered 13 miles in soft snow , and we barely have enough energy to make dinner . After a meal of chicken ,I sit on a rock on top of the ridge .There is no light visible in direction , not even another campfire . For four days we do not see another human begin . We are isolated in a way that mixes fear with joy . In our imagination we have finally caught up with Lewis and Clark . 56. We learn from the passage that before 1805 ______

59. Judging from the context , Lewis and Clark were most probably ______ A. two native Indians

B. explorers of the early 19 th century

C. merchants who did business with the Indians

D. travelers whose curiosity took them over the Lolo Pass

60. We can infer from the passage that in crossing the Lolo Pass the author ______ A. was following the trail of Lewis and Clark B. was trying to set a world record C. was attempting the impossible
