One steamy July afternoon in central Arkansas, my house caught fire unfortunately. I was lost for words to describe the feeling of seeing my home going up in flames. But the panic that filled my shocked heart in that awful moment was for the nine cats that shared my home after being rescued from situations of abuse and abandonment.

The amazing firefighters arrived in time, but the chemical-laden smoke had already caused deaths. I examined

5

and kissed each cat goodbye, extremely grateful that they had passed away gently, without injuries or burns. After staying with a friend for weeks, I was relocated to a furnished apartment. One evening I was occupied in writing a mystery novel when a “meow” sounded from outside the apartment door. Was it my mind playing tricks again? More than once I had heard, seen or felt the brush of one of my departed furry roommates. The meow grew louder and more insistent. Curious, I opened the door.

Sitting on the doorstep was a kitten (小猫) with a black coat and alert amber eyes. A neighbor walking by picked him up and began petting him. When I remarked how cute her kitten was, she explained that he had been born under a bridge and looked around for food. This kitty-loving neighbor was quick to offer an extra litter box asking if I was interested in giving him a home. My immediate reaction was a seemingly humorous “that’s all I need!” After all, my determination had been well reasoned and remained firm. But without hesitation she put the adorable kitten down. I thanked her and closed the door, determined to just let him stay until a real home could be found.

That night, as I slid between the sheets of the bed in the still unfamiliar apartment, the energetic little fur ball jumped onto the bed yawned dramatically, and nestled by my side. That was the first night since the fire that I actually slept. Needless to say, the cat community knew the precise treatment for healing far better than I.

The name Starlight (Star for short) just occurred to me because that night he brought some light back into my life. He adored wrestling rubber bands, raced up and down the stairs, darted outside anytime the door opened, suddenly appeared everywhere I didn’t want him to be, held onto the broom while I was trying to sweep, and rolled in catnip or whatever else happened to be on the floor.

In the five years since the fire, we have been through a lot, Starlight and I. We returned to the house, managed to keep the business alive, brought the mystery novel to the final edits before it’s submitted in the hope of publication. Star helped me through a massive, yet untraditional, healing of spirit. The memories of the kitties that passed away in the fire now spark only warmth in my heart and win some smiles. Every single day, I appreciate the serendipitous (有意外收获的) nature of the Universe that sent me hope in the form of a little black fur ball.

So take a little advice from my furry friend: no matter how hopeless things may become or how fixed your resolution may be, open the door whenever opportunity knocks. It just might be a star to light your way. 41. What made the author relieved after the fire was put out? A. The cats being rescued from situations of abandonment. B. The cats being lost in the fire without receiving injuries. C. A description of the belongings going up in flames D. A new house being designed for him to move in. 42. What probably caused the author to open the door?

6

A. The brush of his departed furry roommates playing tricks on him. B. The impact of the fire that burnt down his house on his soul. C. The curiosity about the novel written in memory of his cats. D. The thought of making sure that it was a kitten outside 43. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 mean? A. The author desired to make friends with a cat-loving neighbor. B. The author made a decision not to take in any animals. C. The author didn’t consider a cat-loving neighbor as a friend D. The author made a decision to adopt other animals. 44. What did the author say about Starlight? A. It was given a unsuitable name “Starlight”. B. It was very naughty and made him annoyed. C. It made him regain hope and make progress. D. It knew how to give right treatment for healing. 45. What is the best title for the passage? A. The Dream for Kittens C. The Power of Resolutions

“If you don’t behave, we’ll call the police.” is lie that parents generally use to get their young children to behave. Parents’ lies work in the short terms, but a new study led by NTU Singapore suggests that they’re associated with harmful effects when the child becomes an adult.

The research team asked 379 Singaporean young adults whether their parents lied to them when they were children how much they lie to their parents now, and how well they adjust to adulthood challenges. Adults who reported being lied to more as children were more likely to report deceiving their parents in their adulthood. They also said they faced greater difficulty in meeting psychological and social challenges.

Lead author Assistant Professor Setoh Peipei from NTU Singapore’s School of Social Sciences said, “Parenting by lying can seem to save time especially when the real reasons behind why parents want children to do something is complicated to explain. When parents tell children that ‘honesty is the best policy’, but display dishonesty by lying, such behavior can send conflicting messages to their children. Parents’ dishonesty may eventually break trust and promote dishonesty in children. Our research suggests that parenting by lying is a practice that has bad consequences

7

for children when they grow up. Parents should be aware of this and consider alternatives to lying, such as acknowledging children’s feelings, giving information so children know what to expect, offering choices and problem-solving together, to help children develop good behavior.”

The analysis found that parenting by lying could place children at a greater risk of developing problems that the society disapproves, such as aggression (侵害) and rule-breaking behavior. Some limitations of the study include relying on what young adults report about their past experience of parents’ lying. “Future research can explore using more information providers, such as parents, to report on the same topic,” suggested Asst Prof Setoh. 46. Why is a parental lie mentioned in the first paragraph? A. To introduce the topic for discussion. B. To tell a popular way to educate children. C. To prove the great influence of the police. D. To show the harmful effects of parental lies.

47. The underlined word “deceiving” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to “________”. A. worrying

B. abusing

C. disappointing

D. cheating

48. Why do parents lie to their children based on the passage? A. Their parents lied to them when they were young. B. They think lying to their children can avoid wasting time. C. They believe dishonesty can help solve adulthood challenges. D. They are afraid their children will suffer more by telling truth. 49. According to the research, which of the following can parents do? A. Identify with the children’s emotions. B. Force good behavior on their children. C. Stop children knowing what to expect. D. Let children solve problems independently.

50. What does the last paragraph imply about the study? A. It is quite controversial. B. It is rather meaningless. C. It needs to be perfected. D. It demands honest responses.

【答案】46. A 47. D 48. B 49. A 50. C

We have often heard that “work smart and not hard”. Does only smart work bring you success? And if so, then why are so many of us still busy putting our blood and sweat into working hard? Here, we’ll discuss hard work and smart work.

Hard work sticks to the traditional form of doing work. It is all about consistently working towards a particular goal irrespective (不考虑的) of its worth, not being worried about the result and not using any means to reduce your effort. Hard work requires a lot of commitment and sincerity from the person. Although being boring and tiresome, it can give you the best results if it is done with heart and soul.

One of the preconditions of smart work is having an in-depth knowledge or experience of the work in hand, because that allows you to look for efficient ways to do the work in a planned and organized manner. Being a smart worker saves a lot of time as you can find means to reduce your work by using logical and innovative ways to achieve your goals. Besides, it also gives you enough time to learn a new task while completing the present one.

Although it seems that smart work is a better option, what we forget is that smart work is the fruit of hard work. Only when you work hard you gather the expertise (专业技能) and the knowledge to understand the work in hand and efficiently improve on it and work smartly.

So which do you think should be preferred? We are sure you have heard of “United we stand, divided we fall.”, and that is true in this case too. You will attain great heights and lead a better and comfortable life if you combine both smart and hard work together. If you are not smart your hard work will never pay. A donkey only does hard work, while a horse does hard work and uses its smartness whenever and wherever it needs. In a similar way, smart work is the result of hard work. To master the quality of smart work, you really need to work hard. Through hard work, we gain experience which helps us discover new things that in turn enables us to work smartly. The effort is important, but where to make that effort makes a difference.

51. What can we learn about hard workers from Paragraph 2? A. They lack proper work skills. B. They always have great patience. C. They tend to ignore the goal of work. D. They obtain excellent results from their work. 52. Smart workers can save a lot of time by ________. A. making a sensible plan B. making use of creative ways C. learning experience from others D. getting inspiration from a new task

9

53. What does the author think of hard work? A. It is inspiring. C. It is challenging.

B. It is efficient. D. It is fundamental.

54. In the author’s view, the improvement of work pattern requires ________. A. keeping working hard

B. finding a method of working smartly C. combining smart work with hard work

D. choosing a suitable way of working based on your need

55. What does the example of donkey in Paragraph 6 intend to show? A. It is useless to work hard. B. It is necessary to work smartly. C. The efforts you make matter most. D. The horse is cleverer than the donkey.

【答案】51. B 52. B 53. D 54. C 55. B

Graduating from high school is a momentous occasion in any young person’s life, and many choose to have a big party to celebrate those four years of hard work. However, Leanne Carrasco, a Texas teen, decided that she didn’t want a party for herself, and instead she chose to host a pizza party for the homeless as a way to celebrate her big day.

The teen explained why she made a decision to think of others instead of herself on such a milestone occasion. She said, “Not a lot of people have the same options as me. There are a lot of people who need help. So I give it.”

Although Carrasco had volunteered at the Star of Hope’s Women and Family Development Center with her family over the years, this time she decided to enlist the help of friends and fellow students to pull off the party. Not only did Carrasco provide about 90 pizzas for the residents of the shelter but she and her friends also collected 400 personal care bags to give out to those in need.

Clearly, Carrasco’s actions had an impact on the shelter residents and the administration. “The teens had respect for these people.” Scott Arthur, a spokesman for Star of Hope said. “The residents saw this as a proof that people do care. To express their gratitude, they gave Carrasco a standing ovation (鼓掌欢呼) while many lined up to give the teenager hug and personally thanked her for her thoughtfulness.”

10

All in all, Carrasco and her friends served lunch to about 200 people during their pizza party. “It was a very magical day,” Arthur said. “It gives you a hope for the youth of today. They (the high schoolers) were able to think of other people.”

56. How did Carrasco celebrate her high school graduation day?(no more than 15 words) 57. Why did Carrasco choose to think of others instead of herself?(no more than 10 words) 58. What does the underlined word “enlist” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?(1 word) 59. How did residents of the shelter feel about Carrasco’s actions?(no more than 10 words)

【答案】Dear Lucy,

How is everything going? I’m writing to tell you about the major I will choose in the university. I have decided to major in computer science. There are some reasons why I made such a decision.

Firstly, with the development of society, computers are playing an important role in many aspects of our life. Secondly, browsing the Internet is one of my hobbies, so I think I can study computer science well. Last but not least, being good at computer science may help me find a good job after graduating from college.

What about your plan? Expect to hear from you as soon as possible.
