Sometimes interpreters may come across difficult words that they cannot understand.In this situation, interpreters should acquire the ability to guess the meanings through the context.

There are two types of context, i.e. verbal context and non-verbal context. On the linguistic level, interpreters can guess the meaning of a word from the previous or following utterance. For instance, some words will be followed by an attributive clause or an appositive clause to further explain what it means. Moreover, interpreters can guess the meaning based on the logic of the context. Besides, quite often speakers will state an opinion repeatedly, so there are different words with similar meanings, which helps us to grasp the meaning.

As for the non-verbal context, interpreters should learn to guess the meaning according to the theme, content, tone of the speech, even the audience. Therefore, it is very essential to be familiar with the background information before doing interpreting. Step 4 Practices: Dialogue & passage interpreting (50 mins)

Memorizing the information in the source language is essential to interpreting. The difficulty in memorizing is largely due to the intensity of information in a very short time. Therefore, interpreters ought to do enough memory training to improve efficiency.There are 2 kinds of memory: long-term memory and short-term memory. Long-term memory refers to the storage of a person's common knowledge, specialized knowledge, and experiences etc. It is restored for relatively a long time. While short-term memory is the instant memory of the information just received. It lasts no more than 1 minute.

形象记忆是指以感知过的事物的形象为内容记忆,是对事物的形状,体积,质地,颜色,运动状态等具体形象的识记,保持和重现.

口译中的形象记忆分两类:静态形象记忆和动态形象记忆.

静态形象记忆常用于语篇,适用于如空间结构,人物景物等静态信息的记忆. 形象记忆要求译员有良好的形象思维能力,更重要的是有充分的背景知识.译员平时要多看多学,扩大自身知识积累.

动态形象记忆,是指对于事物描述类或动作完成类信息,译员可以想象成动态的画面,储存在短时记忆中,稍后提取信息时像电影重放一样,能快速全面地复述出所记忆的内容。 主要应用:事物描述类,动作完成类。

(1) Interpreters are more confident and able to finish interpretation more smoothly and successfully, if they master an large number of useful expressions and have diverse ways of expressing the same messages. Therefore, interpreters need to accumulate a large quantity of useful vocabulary, sentence structures with the same meanings. 1) For instance,

“增加20%”can be translated into “increase by 20%”; “rise by 20%”; “with an increase of 20%”; “with a rise of 20%”.

2) “过去的二十年里,少数民族地区的经济社会得到不断的发展。” can be translated as follows:

The past two decades have witnessed continued economic and social development in the ethnic minority areas.

People in the ethnic minority areas have achieved continued economic and social development over the past two decades.

The economy and society of the ethnic minority areas have been developed continuously over the past two decades.

Over the past two decades, continued economic and social development has been attained in the minority concentrated areas. (2) Fluency in interpreting is very essential. There are 3 ways to improve fluency in interpreting: 1)Reciting useful sentence structures

2)Shadowing: read after a piece of speech with the script again and again to accumulate useful expressions.

3) Spontaneous speech: practice useful expressions, pay attention to the way of

delivering a speech, manners, and the ability to organize your thought and speak out logically

英语用twice as…as, twice the number/size/length of, to increase by 100%,以及double来表示。例如:

(1)他们今年的产量是去年的两倍。/ 他们今年的产量比去年增加了一倍。/ 他们今年的产量比去年翻了一番。

a. Their output this year is twice as much as what it was last year. b. Their output this year is twice the amount of what it was last year. c. Their output this year is double what it was last year.

d. Their output this year has doubled, compared with what it was last year. e. Their output this year has increased by 100% over last year. (2)这辆车的价钱是那辆的两倍。/ 这辆车比那辆车贵一倍。

a. This car is twice as costly as that one. b. This car is twice the cost of that one. 2) 表示“甲是乙的三倍”

英语用thrice/three times as …as, thrice/three times the number of; to increase by 200%,以及triple /treble 来表示。例如: 这幢楼是那幢楼的三倍高。/ 这幢楼比那幢楼高两倍。

This building is thrice/three times as high as that one./ This building is thrice/three times the height of that one. 3) 表示“甲是乙的四倍”

表示四倍,英语用four times/fourfold, 以及quadruple和 to increase by 300%。表示四倍以上的依此类推。例如:

到2000年,我国的生产总值将是1980年的四倍。/

到2000年,我国的国民生产总值将在1980年的基础上翻两番。/ 到2000年,我国的国民生产总值将比1980年增加三倍。

3) Interpreting Numbers with the Meaning of “Nearly” (将近)

CH: 近、快、将近、几乎、差不多、差一点儿、差一点儿不到…… ENG: nearly, almost, toward, close on…

4) Interpreting Indefinite Numbers Which Mean “More Than”(多于) CH: 多于、大于、高于、超过、多、以上……

ENG: more than, over, above, upwards of, and more, odd, and odd… 5) Interpreting Numbers Which Are Between Particular Numbers (介于) CH: 到、至、介于…之间……

ENG: from … to …, (anywhere) between… and … 2. Expressions:
